Shelby Goertzen, Gymnastics Instructor Comes to Gymnastics Beat from: British Columbia, Canada School Attended: Canadian University College, Walla Walla College, Loma Linda University School Honors: National Dean’s List, multiple nominations B.S., Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology M.S., Speech-Language Pathology Major Accomplishments: Shelby was on a high school gymnastics/acro sport team for five years. The focus was never on competition, but rather performances and exhibitions. The team raised money by holding gymnastics/acro sport lessons for elementary school kids and holding clinics in various places around the province of British Columbia. The Acronix team was affiliated with a national drug awareness and education organization. The team toured while talking with kids about the dangers of drug abuse traveling from Central California to the Yukon Territory including Alaska. The experience must have been great, because 15 years later, he found himself teaching at Gymnastics Beat! He began his professional career in Fresno while his original plan was to stay for 2 to 3 years before moving up north. Shelby transitioned from L&J Telesmanic Rehab Systems, Inc., to Fresno Unified School District when he realized that having a life and having a career weren’t necessarily the same thing. Now, he works full-time with students for FUSD. Goals: Shelby would love to find a way in which to combine his volunteer and professional life. Both involve working with kids from pre-k on up. His volunteer life involves a much larger cross section of life than the realm of formal education. “Face it, much of the best learning in life happens outside of a school campus.” Cool Facts: He has been married for 10 years! Shelby and his wife were the directors of a coed scout-like organization called Pathfinders for five years. They share Guardianship of a family of seven children between the ages of 12 and 19. The two girls in the family, Maivnkauj and Mai Ying, attend classes at Gymnastics Beat. He returned to the sport of gymnastics while attending our terrific adult workout program.
